Comments
Comments: This was a 7 day trip. One night at Roaring Brook and 5 nights at Chimney Pond (allowing for 4 hiking days). Single digit temperatures and 40-50 mph wind kept us off the mountain until our last hiking day. We summited Hamlin and Baxter in 10 degree temps and 10-15 mph wind. Summits were in and out of the clouds as we had some snow, sunshine and low clouds. We started up Hamlin ridge with snowshoes, but switched to crampons half way up. Crampons worked well for most of the rest of the hike; however, we broke through the crust occasionally and had a little knee deep snow between peaks. Blue ice was mostly on the boulders on Hamlin Ridge. Five other people summited that day.
The trail from Abol Bridge parking was good (better on the way out) and packed down by snowmobiles. The trail from Roaring Brook to Chimney Pond was only a sled path on the way up, but was snowmobiled when we came down.
