Lodge-to-Lodge Trail, Head of the Gulf Trail, Rim Trail, Pleasant River Tote Road |

| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Tons of spots at the north lot (though it was definitely not empty). Requires a day pass which you can get at one of the North Maine Woods checkpoints. It’s $13/day/person for Maine residents and $18 for non-residents. |
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
| Recommended Equipment: |
| Water Crossing Notes: |
If you approach it from the north, everything is easy. According to the folks at the checkpoint, the water was running 19 inches deep at the southern approach and was moving very fast due to the recent rains. |
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
One blowdown on Pleasant River Tote and blazes could use some updating on the Rim Trail. |
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw three other pups on the trail. Dogs are required to be on leash. If your dog is prone to going just a tad too far at times, Rim Trail can be tricky as there are many sheer drop-offs. |
| Bugs: |
Surprisingly almost none. |

| Comments: |
Despite living in Maine for decades, we’d never done this one. We’re used to hiking the Whites since they’re closer to our house. We’ve completed a good chunk of the Terrifying 25. So trust me when I say do NOT underestimate this hike. There are several no-fall areas on the Rim Trail, which, despite not having a ton of elevation, is as gnarly a trail as anything in the Whites. The rocks are mostly slate which gets super slippery when wet.
With all that said, this is a spectacular hike. The gulf is incredible, especially after some rain. Well worth it. Pics and vids will be up tomorrow on my Instagram (quantum.moxie) but now I’m going to bed! |
