Trails
Trails: Ski trails, Saddleback Spur, Appalachian Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, August 11, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Although I was dropped off/picked up by my husband who biked instead, there was lots of parking in the lot just before the base lodge.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Nothing to report. I was able to rock hop through the wet areas using my poles to find the stones/sticks hiding in the mud.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a few. No water once past the summit buildings - the summit steward hoped dogs wouldn't drink the alpine bog water which most likely is not safe (or get off trail getting to it).
Bugs
Bugs: There were bees among the wildflowers along the route up the ski slope. It's a pretty narrow path in spots but I parted the path with my poles and they moved off (I'm allergic so vigilant)
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: nothing to report

Comments
Comments: The start of the trail is right behind the lodge and has a sign there and occasionally after that. It goes up the Grey Ghost trail and then straight between the top of the chair and The Nest and eventually bears right and then finally into the woods on a regular trail. Some of the trail is quite steep and gravelly and I switched backed some of those steepest sections. There are a couple of ledge scrambles some folks seemed to pause about and one wonky, untethered, wide iron rung ladder for a 7 foot section of ledge. It was fine just a little sketchy. Beautiful open trail most of the way so you are distracted by all the mountains in the distance. Although I thought I had a late start at 9:15 I met a lot of people on my way down (Sunday). I had picked up a free trail map in the bike shop and used the lodge bathroom which was very helpful.
