Planned to do these peaks in the morning and potentially pick one more peak off before heading home. Unfortunately, when I drove up Alder Stream Road, I found the bridge completely impassible at around 6 miles (just after Sawyer Ridge Road) where the road crosses Alder Stream by a couple of camps. I followed the road for a number of miles until it ended at ~2300' in the valley between Onion and Boil and followed moderate woods initially up the slope of Onion Hill. Around 2800'-3100', the woods became very thick (I believe this is old logging regrowth) after which they opened up. The slope up the south side of the peak was also very steep. The top was obvious. I followed slightly to the N of the ridge and saddle between Onion and Boil and found open woods the entire way, though Boil Mtn's slopes are also very steep (as can be evidenced if you see them from the Snow Mtn firetower). The summit of Boil is obvious. I found the glass jar on the ground and full of water, but I brought no replacement with me. I left it on the boulder which appears to be the highest point. I poked around the summit area and found thick woods in all directions, so I backtracked down to ~3200' and angled down the valley until I found the logging road, finding mostly open woods. This was a significantly longer day than I anticipated (~15 miles), but with gates on the other approaches I can see in the DeLorme atlas, I don't see an easier way to get these peaks. |
