Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Caribou Mountain, ME
Trails
Trails: Caribou Trail, Mud Brook Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, September 21, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Well, there used to be a pit toilet at the trailhead but fortunately the Hastings Campground is super close and it has one right at the beginning of the campsite loop. Otherwise room for about a dozen cars at the trailhead lot.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Everything is a rock hop right now.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Caribou below the wilderness sign is entirely clear. Above the wilderness sign there are two new-appearing skinny pole blowdowns at a really awkward height (waist high) near the Kees Falls water crossing (noting that Kees Falls is basically a trickle, right now). Mud Brook has nothing new above or below the wilderness sign and there is nothing obstructing. Thanks for the recent axe work! Both of the wilderness signs are so sparklingly-new that the original wood shavings are still sticking to the routing marks. Wowza.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: My pupper Echo, who just adopted me last weekend, really liked this route. We saw 3 other dogs and 2 of them were under control. It’s a great route for dogs as it has great footing and lots of squirrels and chippies.

Comments
Comments: We hiked the non-standard clockwise route because I wasn’t sure if Echo would be up for the whole thing and I wanted to give her the best footing first. Though we got a late start (for us) we didn’t run into lots of people until we were descending Mud Brook. Wow, this was a popular hike with an AMC group of more than 2 dozen people, along with lots of other hikers. It was a great choice for the conditions as I could see the the NH 4kers, as well as the visible Maine 4ker (Old Speck) were socked in. I really like this route, in either direction!
