Classic One More Thing trip.
After exiting Highwater trail at 2:15p we opted to do Wheeler Brook Trail.
(Like the Vista Spur on Baldland Trail in Jackson, we wondered why this trail is in the guidebook.)
Larry Brook Road up to the dead end is spotted with very nice campsites, and in fine shape. The logging road portion of this trail is in good shape, and not brushy. Climbing up the trail itself we found a lot of slippery rocks, down branches, slickery leaves and muck. We found a mylar balloon at the HOL and packed it out. Heading down the Route 2 side of Wheeler Brook we were met with a brushy trail; hobble bush, beech and mini maples. This is also where we found the largest mud pits. It seems once we hit the boundary line area for the training area it got very nice! There is an unsigned fork in the trail just before the road, go right.
If you are considering this trail for any reason, find a friend who will at least drop you off on one end if they won't hike it with you. Better yet find yourself a Nordic_gal who will do both. It's always more fun with a friend.
