Arrived at golf course lot around 7 and headed out. Only two other hikers heading to caribou pond road today, one of which, Michelle, was also heading to the crockers so we took turns breaking trail. Once we got to the steep open face part the snow became very deep and super difficult to break through, not far past that the blowdowns became more and more frequent to the point that it was impossible to stay completely on the trail. We reached the summit of south Crocker at 12:40 and debated attempting to get over to north, but conditions were just too much and we decided to abandon that peak and head back for the day. Once back in the parking lot we came across the other hiker out on caribou pond rd, he made it up to Spaulding in similar conditions and wound up abandoning Sugarloaf as that section was also not broken out yet. All in all very difficult hiking in carabassett valley at higher elevations currently, if you’re planning to go be prepared to go slower and work hard for the peaks lol. Many many thanks to Michelle for breaking trail with me, I absolutely would not have been able to get to the summit without the help! |
