Big Moose is one of the Pinnacle Pursuit peaks. In an attempt to tag this one, we opted to hike up the ski slope rather than try to tackle the trail. The trail would have required a road walk on a winter road closures. We didn't have any intel whether anyone had summited via the road walk/trail. The route up the ski slope was straight forward and steep on the upper section. At the top of the old abandoned lift, we found an entrance into the woods on the right. At this point we were breaking out the route. The pathway was fairly easy to follow, but we did some meandering due to blowdowns, leaners and heavy ladened branches. It was a mix of unsupported snow sinking down to our knees with snowshoes, staying on top of wind driven snow, and punching through thigh deep snow. It took some looking around to find a way across the ridge to true summit. We made it around the cell phone tower and over to the small building with solar panels and antennas. There was no evidence of anyone coming up from the trail side. The trip down was much better and the views of the lake descending the ski slopes were fantastic. Total mileage 4.5 miles, total time 3 hrs 20 mins. |
