Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I drove down the Stone House Road to the junction with Woods Road. At that point there is a lot of snow and frozen mush on the road with tire tracks. I didn't want to risk getting stuck, so I turned around and parked by the intersection of the Stone House Road and Bickford Brook Road. A Ford FX Off Road truck was able to drive all the way to the hiker parking at the gate.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow - Spring Snow, Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There are only minor brook crossings. All are easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are some trees down on the trails. One 4-5" diameter hardwood across the White Cairn Trail on the first rock staircase about 2 feet above the surface. Easy to get over. There were 2 or 3 downed trees on the Stone House Trail. Not difficult to get by. The wilderness sign on the White Cairn Trail is broken. A sign for the hunting season date on the Stone House Trail was on the ground.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs. Saw four dogs with a couple of hikers who were heading to Rattlesnake Pool. Bear dogs prohibited.

Comments
Comments: There were a mix of surface conditions; snow, slush, mud, water, rock ledges, and leaves. I only used an old pair of microspikes. The most snow was on the road, spots around the summit of Blueberry Mountain, and the upper and lower portions of the Stone House Trail. There were lengthy stretches of dry trail often covered in leaves. The rock ledges on the White Cairn Trail had no ice or snow. There were frequent spots of standing water on the Outlook Loop. I checked out the conditions on the Blueberry Ridge Trail heading towards Speckled Mountain. There were recurrent stretches of snow with some bare ledges in between. I decided not to continue as the snow surfaces were weak in spots with underlying water.
Great views from the ledges on White Cairn and the summit ledges. On the descent I stopped at Rattlesnake Pool with its green tinted deep pool of water and gushing cascades. The steep bank down to the edge of the brook was free of snow and ice to permit safe passage. I also visited Rattlesnake Gorge with a great view from the bridge. There was ice draped on the chasm wall. Both side trips are short and signed from the Stone House Trail.
There is a stretch of the Stone House Trail that has no blazes and requires attention to stay on the trail as the pathway is covered in leaves.
