Comments
Comments: The trail up Round Mountain is in excellent shape, and it has clearly been meticulously maintained. Round Mountain is a relatively short, but very steep hike, gaining close to 1,000' in less than a mile. There are a number of great viewpoints, and we stopped to enjoy lunch at the uppermost viewpoint on the Rock Castle Loop. There wasn't a cloud in the sky, and the views of the snowcapped Presidentials were stunning.

After enjoying the views, I spent some time climbing around the Rock Castle. The Rock Castle is a huge pile of boulders below the summit that have broken off the cliff above. There are numerous caves through the rocks, and it is capped off by a huge knife-edged boulder on top. It is one of my favorite boulder cave systems to explore in the state, and I always seem to find new passageways every time I'm there. It is one that seems to fly under the radar, and it has a higher percentage of through caves than most spots in the state, as opposed to dead-ends.

After exploring the Rock Castle, we descended back to our car. At the trailhead, we ran into another group about to start up the mountain, and they were the only other people that we saw out on the trails all day.
