 | Comments: |
Today's hike was an out-and-back up and over Buck Hill in Monson. Located on the Appalachian Trail, Buck Hill offers a viewpoint towards the north from near its summit for relatively little effort. The trail from the north is a bit longer, but has less elevation gain, and it passes near Upper Doughty Pond. The Doughty Ponds are a pair of beautiful undeveloped ponds, and the short side trail is worth the detour. The trail from the south is short and direct, if unremarkable, with a bit more elevation gain. Although young trees are starting to obscure the viewpoint near the summit, there are still good views of the mountains in the 100 Mile Wilderness. Also, Goodell Brook Falls, near the trailhead on Route 15, is another worthwhile detour, and it is a great place to cool off after a hike. |
