You've got to hit the weather right with this mountain. The hike to the Horn is 7.0 miles, and 99% of it is exposed. The hike goes up the ski slope until you reach the terminal at top, then goes up on a more natural rock trail to a false summit, and then Saddleback itself (approximately 1700 ft of elevation gain to get here). You will add another 1100 going to the horn. You drop sharply into a valley for 500 or so feet, and then climb again to the Horn. The views along the way are stunning on a good day. 360 degrees most of the time once you've hit the top. Wind seems to be an issue here too, so pay attention to the mountain forecast and dress appropriately. Today it was strong in the am which helped with the sun and keeping away the bugs. It died down in the afternoon, and the black flies came to visit. |
