As other have noted, someone (or some group) of fine individuals took out a gazillion blowdowns on this AT section. Holy moly that was a lot of work - thank you!
The AT has fine footing, and the herd path to Redington is, as others have said, a gymnasium of blowdowns. Lots of AT thru hikers enjoying this great weather!
The Road That Shall Not Be Named. Really. The map (and the Maine Mountain Guide) say that it is Caribou Valley Road, but there are no signs of any kind. The shenanigans start right away, with the random deep potholes. The real problems are about 2 miles in when you get to the metal culverts that are partially or fully exposed due to erosion. I can see the one that has caused people previously to turn around. Overall my Subaru Crosstrek did fine, but definitely drive super-slow. I would not attempt this drive on a wet day as there appear to be multiple spots where the mud is deeply rutted. It was all SUVs at the trailhead, and one Hummer. I have never wanted a Hummer before today. All of this was concerning enough but what really had my heart hammering in my chest were the half dozen wooden bridges that you had to drive over. With the road in such bad shape, how are the bridges? Eek. It took me about 30 white-knuckled, creative-swearing minutes to drive the 3.8 miles, both heading in and heading out. |
