 | Water Crossing Notes: |
The Sandy River is crossed on a small metal bridge. No other water crossings of note. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trail in good condition. Nice new steppingstones down low. Some nice rock steps in places.
Some bog bridges were slightly wobbly.
One tree fall just uphill from Piazza Rock Lean-to can be straddled (about 2.5 to 3 ft above surface).
There were two places uphill of Eddy Pond that tree falls had off path diversions to get around.
All other tree falls were easy to get by.

|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Fine for dogs. Keep control of the dog to avoid stepping on the alpine flora. |
|
 | Bugs: |
Only flying grasshoppers above tree line. |

 | Comments: |
All surfaces were dry. Even the trail past Muddy Pond was mostly dried out. The pitched ledges were all dried so there was no slippage on these surfaces. There are some metal rungs and one metal ladder to assist the hikers.
Chamber of Commerce weather today. Great views of the surrounding lakes and other NW ME high peaks. Three ponds alongside the trail with Eddy Pond being the largest. One can also visit Piazza Rock and the Caves just off the AT (by the tent site).
All other day hikers elected to use the ski area approach rather than the AT from route 4. The round-trip hike to The Horn from route 4 is 14.6 miles.
Met many AT hikers (both north and south bound AT hikers). |
