 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Same conditions as noted for my hike the previous day. Parking lot was empty on arrival both days. |

 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Due to the drought the crossing of the South Branch of the Carrabassett River was easy. Crossed the river by boulder hopping but can also use a wooden plank that is in place. No other water crossings of note. |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Overall, the AT and spur trails are in good condition. Major exception is the portion of the AT that crosses the base of Spaulding. I was warned by several thru hikers the previous day on my hike up to the Crockers that numerous blowdowns were partially blocking the trail. I can confirm this. Most can be either walked over or around but they definitely slow things down on this section of the trail. It looked like someone (MATC?) had cleared the spurs to Spaulding and Sugarloaf. Greatly appreciated. Did not have my folding saw because I was told the trees were all too large. This is partly true, but about half could have been easily cleared using a folding Silky saw.
The maintenance roads descending from the top of Sugarloaf were dry and dusty with loose surface gravel. On step sections don't underestimate the slip/fall potential. |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Again, things were pretty dry and without any appreciable rain best to bring extra water for the dog. Last best water is the river. |
|
 | Bugs: |
In general, no major bug issues except for the summit of Sugarloaf. I was the only one there and the no see ums welcomed me. |

 | Comments: |
With drop off at the yellow gate and pick up at the Sugarloaf base lodge this was a great day hike. Beautiful weather both days really helped, just a slight bit of color starting to show on the trees. Having stayed the night at the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel helped in getting an early start, which allowed for a reasonable trip back home to central NH that afternoon/evening.
Previous reports on this site definitely helped in planning my trip. Thanks to all who have posted info. |
