Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Caribou Pond Road (formerly Caribou Valley Road, no longer marked by a sign off route 27) is a rutted mess ... high clearance vehicle highly recommended if you're looking to hike Crockers, Redington, Sugarloaf or any nearby peaks via Caribou Pond Road access ... i drove my truck with high clearance in to the parking area 3.8 miles up CPR, where the road is gated just before the old iron bridge ... they might open that gate in Winter for snowmobiles to access Caribou Pond and nearby trails ? there was a small van with maybe 4" clearance parked in that area ... can't imagine Evil Knievel reaching that lot in that magic van, and even if he did, how much he'd owe for a new muffler ... as they say, high clearance and maybe 4WD would be a good option when driving roads like these ... or even better, any rental car might be your best bet ...

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: herd path up to Redington is mostly clear until the upper half mile, where small blowdowns block the path - easy enough to side step blowdowns, but if someone brings a handsaw it would be easy to open this path up and make it a beautiful Winter trek, xc skiing CPR then snowshoeing the path ... (one of our favourite NE100 Winter trips from years ago!)

Comments
Comments: easy 11+ mile round trip hike from the CPR parking area at the gate 3.8 miles up Caribou Pond Road from route 27 ...

follow CPR a few? miles past the gate to Caribou Pond, turn right when you reach the pond, follow the obvious footpath: hike 0.8 mile then turn right at a cairn, hike 0.6 miles then turn left at a cairn, then follow the obvious path to Redington summit ... you'll reach a T intersection about 0.2 miles before the summit, turn left for Redington summit, or follow that path down to the right if you're hiking the herd path over to the Crockers ... didn't see a cannister on Redington summit, but the old summit sign is nailed to a tree near the high point
