There is an obvious log landing/ parking area off Tripptown Road, marked with a small logo sign. Parking was not plowed out but I was able to drive over the snow berm with my small car and park just off the road. |

Hiked up Bill Merrill Mountain in Hiram, within NEFF's Merrill Mountain Community Forest. The trail is an obvious old 4WD track (now blocked to motor vehicles by piles of stones and deadwood) that runs nearly direct up the ascending ridgeline, steep in many places, with a few switchbacks. The track is visible in GPS applications that use OSM data. At about 1,500 elevation, a side trail to the east leads a few hundred feet to a ledgy area with decent views. The summit is wooded and marked by a small cairn. Snow depth was 4" fresh powder at trailhead and about 5" on summit, with bare ground underneath. Without a firm base or ice, I chose to wear spikes up and bare boots down (to save my points, which were biting ground beneath the snow quite a bit). Snowshoes would not have been an unreasonable alternate choice. |
