Comments
Comments: OAB to Crocker then South Crocker. Snowshoes door-to-door. Third time hitting these peaks but first winter hike. Trail consolidated well up to 3800 feet on ascent to Crocker. That side of the cut gets zero sun exposure this time of year. Significant moose postholes on stretch of trail around 2600 feet in elevation. Generally 20-30 inches of snow off-trail but that changes significantly once you hit around 4000 feet from that prevailing northwest wind habitually blowing snow onto the lower-lying eastern terrain. Six to eight feet of snow off-trail through the last 1/2 mile up to Crocker. No steeps but moderate climbing that did require some breaking of the trail out again - nothing too labor intensive. The heightened snow levels at Crocker peak allow views you don't get in the other seasons. The saddle from Crocker to South Crocker was a different story with full sun exposure. The trail had not recently been traveled but was still fairly consolidated with three to four inches of more dense snow that needed to be trampled out with a little snow-shoe skiing to boot. A tighter squeeze through the cut to South ascent so stay on your navigation if trail is not as obvious. Great views from South Crocker as well. Reminds me of the Middle and South Carter winter hikes in NH. Note: You have a lot of dense snow and ice in the trail trees right now with a lot of bending over to get through.
