I made a loop of these peaks to check off some WMG trails and some Maine 3k’s. The trail up to Mahoosuc Arm was in good shape, a little slippery near the top and descending to the pond. I walked around the pond and up to the summit, great views here, but Old Speck’s summit was in a cloud. To get to the trailless Mahoosuc Mtn, I descended back down the Speck Pond trail to 3500’, then slabbed over in good woods to the notch and up the next peak, which was only a 500 foot climb. Easier than expected getting up here. A little searching for the canister in the scrub, and I thought another whacker was coming but it was actually a moose! I used his paths to cross the flat scrubby top. Getting down the south side to the junction with Notch trail was harder than expected. The trees weren’t terribly thick but the terrain was steep and the footing rough with postholing through rotten wood and blowdowns. I met some hikers at the junction. On the way down I cooled off in the stream, then jogged in the hot sun to get back the last few miles of road. (Could have thumbed a ride if I wanted, being a weekend). This was a great hike, about 11 miles and 3,000’. It took me almost 6 hours enjoying the views and stopping to swim. |
