My PCP gave me the go ahead for gentle walks technically starting 1 week post fall but I felt good this morning and really wanted to get out. The Rumford Community Forest opened recently and I happened to read about a nice loop in the Maine Hiking FB group which seemed like it would work well as my first venture out. Wow! What a lovely trail system. The trail initially starts as crushed gravel for about the first .15 miles then transitions to dirt. With the rain we had all day yesterday there were some muddy areas but nothing too squelchy. The Ironwood trail is brand spanking new and has the most wonderful footbed. The leaves are thick so finding the trail is a tad tricky but they have put up flagging tape. Just follow the tape. The trail climbs and winds around the top of a rise where there is a picnic table and a bit of a view. I had some pretty undercast while I was there. I opted to loop over down using the Porcupine Ridge Trail (I mean, who wouldn't want to hike a trail with a name like that?!). This trail is more broken in and has flagging tape as well as blue blazes along the way. There is stonework in one area that crosses a little brook that was just lovely. I had a huge barred owl fly over me and land in a tree which I took as a sign of good things to come. I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason so this downtime has been a way for me to find and explore some new to me trails while I heal. This was just the loveliest morning to putter in the forest and clear spiderwebs. I am still smiling. |
