Peaks Elephant Mountain, ME
Trails
Trails: Elephant Mountain Road, bushwhack
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, October 24, 2026
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: No changes from the last report. Drove a sedan within 0.5 mile of start of herd path on Elephant Mountain Road mostly without issues. It's less of a concern of ground clearance and more just navigating rocky sections. South Arm Road is paved.

Comments
Comments: The beginning of the herd path is completely covered in smaller saplings, seemingly since 2019ish based on tracing back trail reports (see Teal Goat's report). The herd path is still mostly discernible but you are constantly trying to walk and balance on piles of dead saplings until you reach the first boggy section. From here, there is intermittent cairns and flagging tape but the flagging tape isn't always reliable. The herd path is easy to lose with blowdowns and bogs. I found the herd path much easier to follow on the descent. A reminder to wear orange - saw a few hunters out on Elephant Mountain Road.
