trails were frozen ground with some minor ice along signal ridge trail where it parallels the brook. leaf cover on carrigain notch trail requires a little care in places.
we headed up to the the south ridge of mt. lowell from somewhere between 2000-2100 feet through mostly open woods that got increasingly steeper to the ridge coming across a neat scree field and cave at the base of a cliff along the way. a mix of open to thick woods along the ridge with blowdown. recognized summit high point was quite evident. the sub alpine area a short distance north of the summit was pretty awesome.
some steep woods down to the saddle with anderson dropping a bit east and contouring around then some thick steep climbing to the summit which again was not a problem to locate. a great view ledge a bit sw of the high point is not to be missed. we dropped back to the saddle then towards the carrigain notch trail at times following drainages then slabbing towards the trails height of land in the notch so as not to have to regain too much elevation once back on the trail.
a really awesome day bushwacking lowell and anderson. after looking at lowell from the scree slope on vose spur sunday it was agreed that with the perfect conditions recently this hike should be done this week. lots of interesting woods and truly phenomenal views from the open sub alpine area on lowell as well as from near the summit of anderson. fantastic peaks. thanks to timc for a great hike. |
