I wanted to avoid the ice that most of the high peaks had to offer so I went for a little redline hike today. My plan was to head up Owl's Head Trail and over to Martha out-and-back but once I got to Martha I got this stupid idea to head down Cherry Mountain Trail and walk back 115 to my car. I won't do that again. Overall it was an excellent day with excellent views of the Presidential Range and the Franconia Range.
Owl's Head Trail was in good shape but had rough footing down low with all the frozen mud. The ledges on Martha's Mile, right off the summit of Owl's Head Trail, were completely covered in ice and care was taken to avoid a bad fall. The rest of the trail over to Mount Martha was in good shape with about a half-inch of snow. Cherry Mountain Trail was also in decent shape with the only snow up high. I carried microspikes but never put them on. |
