little snow at the trailhead then a crusty coating of snow and some crusty ice low on the trail. a few wet/muddy spots as well. depth increased pretty quickly through the hardwoods the track being packed and a bit rough. at most there was a bit over a foot of snow on the ridge probably 4-8 through much of the hike with some drifts. snow was somewhat condensed with a crust on top. the track had yet to see snowshoes, but has now seen a few pairs higher up so should be in ok shape.
used microspikes to start switching to snowshoes at the fir/spruce line. wore them lower on the descent.
nice first snowshoe hike of the winter. not my original plan, but ended up being just right. conditions in jefferson and at the trailhead would lead you to believe snowshoes aren't warranted, but there is plenty of snow up there once you gain some elevation. good to be out.
