We used Hillsounds for the whole hike, and could stay on top of the snow/crust. Valley Way is very chewed up, especially the last 1/2 mile before the hut. Some of the postholes look like they were made by someone over 7' tall. No problem today but when they are hidden under a light layer of snow they could be a lot worse than an ankle twister. With all the bare rock on the summit cone it was easy to avoid whatever ice there was, and there was a good amount of styrofoam like snow which made for good traction. No wind to speak of. Great day. |
