Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Pull outs at both trailheads clear with room for 5+ cars. Only one there in early afternoon when I arrive and still alone when left.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Ice - Blue, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All crossing around the loop are all solidly frozen
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One 8-10 inch stepvover about 1/3 mile in from the northern trailhead, another 6 inch stepover heading up - several fallen/bent branches under the snow that might trip you up as well heading up. Took out a small crawl under blowdown below imp face. Between Imp face and north Carter junction a couple of smaller 4 inch stepovers and one duck under. In addition a 4-6 inch blowdown has fallen on a number of smaller trees bending them over the and completely blocking the trail - there is a short bypass around. Lots of tree limbs at eye level through this section along with other bent branches at foot level that you'll need to step over.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Good trail for the canines - some steep pitches but nothing bad - only running water I saw on the whole loop was a small trickle between Imp Face and North Carter junction

Comments
Comments: A wonderfully sunny hike. Temps cold but were actually a little better than I had expected - a cold breeze heading up did keep me bundled up. Trail is in amazing shape along the entire loop - bare boots would be fine but used light traction for better grip especially on the steep pitches. All streams crossing are solid ice and easy to cross. Good solid packed powder heading up - there is drifting of snow on the flat section about a mile in but trail path is clear - a few post holes where people got off the hard pack. Good hard packed powder over to North Carter junction - trail from here to Dodge cutoff was smooth like walking down a sidewalk with the random small ice patch - and then nice packed powder to trailhead. Road walk of .3 miles between the trailheads. Perfectly sunny atop Imp Face - surprised that there was no breeze so I sat down, ate a late lunch and enjoyed the views.
