Comments
Comments: the snowmobile trail was packed as was the short section of haystack road heading north to the forest road (blocked by 3 large rocks). i stepped off haystack into a foot of unpacked powder over a semi firm base. in general this depth held true to the summit with some lesser and some deeper drifted sections. i followed the road to what i believe is the usual summer bushwack start at an old clearing on the right. i followed a rough southwest bearing through mostly open hardwoods until hitting the first band of small cliffs and ledges where i swung north to find a route through that avoided the ice on many of the ledgy areas. continuing on the same bearing i followed a line up to the ridge that pretty much matched what i had done in summer a while back. some steep climbing looking for the best route through the small cliffs along the way. once on the ridge i headed directly towards the summit through thick spruce to start which opened up much of the way to the false bump where there is a nearby view up to the summit. here i picked up the herd path and followed it until the climb up to the summit where i was on and off it favoring the west side of the ridge for a bit to get around some thicker sections. the snow around the summit area was unconsolidated and pretty deep, but i found the route of the summer herd path for the last short stretch to the summit (sign/register) which eliminated some potential spruce traps. pretty much followed my same track on the descent with one or two minor deviations.
i wore snowshoes the whole time.
i was a bit surprised with the depth of new and unconsolidated snow in the woods. real nice powder. managed to end up just about on the line i had planned and definitely found some evidence along the way that other people had chosen the same route in the past. did get one good view up to the summit before the clouds really socked in and it started to snow again early afternoon. at times it looked like the sun might burn through and it was bright enough through the clouds to use for navigation on the ascent. a great day out.
