Comments
Comments: The Starr King trail was hard packed base with some loose snow on top. Surface stood up well to the heavy bare boot traffic. Only a few spots that were chopped up but nothing significant. The spring by the side of the trail was snow covered. The trail signs at the summit of Mt Waumbek were about 6-12" above the snow pack.
The Kilkenny Trail was unbroken beyond the Waumbek lookout. There was about a half foot a powder snow over a firm base. Tracking to the trail was difficult at times as the yellow blazes on the trees were on occasion masked by snow on the tree trunks. Also, there was no obvious trail corridor for much of the trail between Mt Waumbek and South Weeks. I took some wrong turns but eventually recovered the trail. There were deep moose tracks, moose droppings, and moose hair in the snow on South Weeks.
I met hikers from all the New England states except Vermont. I saw nobody beyond Mt Waumbek.
