Comments
Comments: greenleaf trail was snow free and mostly dry up to the pass. only a few minor small patches of snow in shaded spots. once in the pass the snow became substantial and gave the impression it might continue that way up towards the hut. off the trail there was only patchy snow and ice on the way to the summit. just beyond the cliffs i slabbed a short distance north then headed mostly west towards the peak. woods were pretty thick and steep and i had to find a route through one significant cliff before reaching a grassy plateau with great views. one more steep thick section and another side trip to a great open ledge then more open and mellow before tightening up again right before the summit. nice ledges just south of the recognized high point and views to lafayette from the summit proper as well. descending i found better woods with less steep tricky spots by staying a bit north of my ascent line. this meant a bit more of a slab once i got back down to around 3k, but seemed worth it.
i carried snowshoes and light traction and never thought of using either one today. if continuing on greenleaf trail to the hut it looked like it would be a different story.
thought i would take advantage of the beautiful day to check out eagle cliff. some dramatic views to the notch and lafayette from various points on the ascent and from the summit area. definitely need to come back and explore the ridge to the north in the future. great to be out.
