Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The series of small brooks on the Slippery Brook Trail were easy to cross
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in good condition with no obstacles. Very small stretch on Baldface Knob trail could use some trimming.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Only dogs comfortable with ledges should go up Baldface Circle Trail beyond the shelter. There are some "high steps" to get up the trail. Little to no water beyond the shelter to the South Baldface summit.
Bugs
Bugs: Lots of mosquitoes in the woods below the shelter and on the Slippery Brook Trail. Black flies when stopped in the open ridge and summit areas.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found:

Comments
Comments: Saw no other hikers today. Trails were in good condition. Only one small wet area on the ledges above the shelter where care had to be taken. Otherwise it was dry ledge.
The Rhodora was in peak bloom on the ledges and on the open ridges. A field of blossoming Rhodora is just up trail from the Baldface Circle-Baldface Knob junction. Also saw Labrador Tea, Bunchberry, Blueberry, Painted Trillium, and Hobblebush.
On arrival at the summit at 9:30AM I could see Mt Washington, Wildcat, Carters, and Moriah as well as Evans Notch. Clouds were billowing and thickening when I finished at noon so there was probably no views.
Anyone uncomfortable with hiking on ledges should not hike beyond the shelter. Also in wet or icy conditions one should consider another route to South Baldface. On a nice day the hike over the ledges is rewarding.
