Trails: Falls in the River Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, June 15, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Room for several cars at the Second Connecticut Lake Dam. The others that were there when I got back to the car were fishermen. At the south/Moose Alley there's no parking other than pulling off the road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail in pretty good shape, much nicer than a typical 4K trail. There's a couple of blowdowns. Trail well marked with yellow Cohos trail "blazes". The short section of Moose Alley that connects Falls in the River to Rt. 3 at its south end was muddy. An unmarked trail went down to the river and was relatively easy to follow, but the endpoint was nothing special relative to what we had been seeing.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fun trail for Pepper. He loves looking over roaring water, and taking sip n dips in the less roaring areas. Easy paw path too. No other hikers meant he ran free.

Comments
Comments: This was the first of 5 redlining hikes, and it was a nice one after a long drive north. The Connecticut River had a good flow and the falls were roaring. Once up in this region the feel is definitely recreational but not at all touristry; there was very little traffic. It's also pretty easy to get the Fourth Connecticut Lake hike, and then go over to do Mt. Magalloway and Garfield Falls. The crossing guards were helpful with the Fourth Connecticut Lake parking, but one no longer needs to check in with them. The Coot and Bobcat trails on Magalloway recently had a huge amount of water bar work. Coot is a pretty muddy old road right now but Bobcat is a nice trail. Garfield Falls were impressive with the high water flow. Magalloway Road is in pretty good shape.
