Date of Hike: Friday, July 5, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: plenty of parking at Guinea Pond TH on Sandwich Notch Road - road was in much better shape than I had anticipated - YAY!!!!
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The wet sections were underwater for significant distances south of the Guinea Pond Spur. Glad I was on the bike (with disc brakes) and pedaling through those puddles - some were so deep I was afraid I'd run over whatever the heck was swimming in them. North of that junction, the side path bypassing the 2 crossings should become the main trail.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Nice Axe-work on the trail!!!! Last year the trail was only rideable by mountain bike until near the Guinea Pond Spur. This time, no blowdowns were in the way - AWESOME!!!!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: none but it would be fine - lots of water, and I mean LOTS!!!!!
Bugs
Bugs: weren't too bad because I was on my bike, but, the minutes I stopped to walk some of the bypasses, the horseflies got me - DEET worked OK

Comments
Comments: I was hoping to ride my mountain bike to Flat Mountain Pond and was prepared to move blowdowns if necessary. Unfortunately, the major bypass north of the Guinea Pond Spur (maybe a mile-ish south of Flat Mountain Pond Trail) was COMPLETELY FLOODED by beaver activity. I kept hunting around in the woods for a bypass for the bypass, but, dragging my bike through the hobblebush got pretty tedious. I couldn't see an easy bushwhack bypass because you kind of come into a narrow way between two huge beaver ponds. I guess if you're hiking, there is a fairly big tree in the pond maybe you could step on, but, it looked unstable and mucky and I couldn't tell where the trail went from there. Until it gets drier out or the beavers die of old age in there, I personally don't think getting to Flat Mountain Pond is viable from this route!!!!

Still, a beautiful morning in the woods - I love this area!!!!!
