| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parking for two cars at small pull-out spot near trailhead -- Bear Mountain Road is pretty eroded, though, so high-clearance vehicle or careful driving with passenger car is necessary. |

| Water Crossing Notes: |
Not an issue. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trails are in decent shape -- they're a bit rough, as is, but that's part of their charm.
A number of recent small (2–3-inch diameter) blowdowns on both trails; could be easily handled with a bow saw. |

| Bugs: |
Plenty of eye flies at the trailhead, but other than that, not an issue. |

| Comments: |
The Bear Mountain Trail, cut in 1942 by Camp Mowglis, is a quick, steep (700 feet of elevation gain in 0.5 miles) scramble up to the Elwell Trail, which one can then follow to some nice ledges that overlook Newfound Lake, and then on to the summit of Bear Mountain -- excellent bang for the buck.
We took the Bear Mountain Trail up, and then the Elwell Trail down to the old Bear Mountain Road, and road-walked the final couple of tenths of a mile back to the car to finish the loop. |
