Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Stony Brook in fine shape..Carter Moriah good in spots and an impossible maze in others..We eventually followed others lead and from the last ledge to the summit stopped looking for the trail and bushwacked without much difficulty.staying the higher ridge to the summit..rock ledge scramble is still filled in an easy going

Comments
Comments: Excellent day out as Liz and Skip finish their 48.. We chose a wrong route at around 2600 feet where trail forked and the snowshoe track vanished..take the hard right there which goes up to the col. We followed left hand route til it petered out then bushwacked through fairly open woods to the ledges about .2 above the actual junction. Trees are heavily cloaked with ice from the recent storm..Felt like a bull in a china shop at times with glass breaking in our wake. Heading up the ledges we were on and off trail and snowshoe tracks but once into the woods lost it for good and set a course and beelined for the summit..except for a couple of spruce traps good footing on the frozen granular surface. Final scramble to the summit snowed in and circles around from the side..Gorgeous views and we were able to linger a bit in the strong March sun. We tried following the trail out but soon got into a thick maze of spruce traps and blowdowns as has been earlier reported and we eventually back tracked the way we had come over..followed the Carter Moriah Trail easily downhill to the col where Stony Brook was evident.... Microspikes the whole day..some of the ledges have some hard blue ice on them but the spikes did fine..
