| Comments: |
The western part of Old Mtn Rd (from the road off Perch Pond Rd to the intersection with Crawford-Ridgepole Trail) is no longer an official trail. The WMG book states this, but the WMG maps still have this half-mile section marked as a hiking trail. The path is wide and easy to hike -- however, be aware that this old trail/road is wide enough for ATVs and hunters actively use it. I hiked it early this morning for an out-and-back on Crawford-Ridgepole Trail to the intersection with Mt. Morgan Trail. On my way back along the ridge, I heard gunshots...constantly and very close. Hunters were all over the western parts of Squam Range, especially between Mt. Webster and Mt. Livermore. I had an "exciting" hike back down that western non-official part of Old Mtn Road...gunfire all around me, very close, and when I got back to my car, there were a few cars next to mine in the lot (hunters, not other hikers).
The moral of the story is -- WEAR YOUR ORANGE! And, for now, consider accessing the Squam Ridge peaks from the eastern side of the mountains (Route 113) and not the hunter-filled western side (Percy Pond Road). |
