Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Moosilauke, Mt. Moosilauke - South Peak, NH
Trails
Trails: Gorge Brook Trail, Carriage Road, South Peak Spur, Snapper Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, November 2, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Gate to Ravine Road was open so parking along road near Lodge was available. It is a dirt road with a lot of frost heaves, pot holes and jutting rocks so care is required, especially with smaller cars. There were at least 15 cars at 7AM when I hit trail and too many to count when I left at 12PM.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Most are bridges. There was one crossing on Snapper Trail very easy on large rocks and several smaller brooks here and there that were no issue.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Lot of new orange signs on many of the trails although I didn't see any blazes (except the white rectangles on the AT sections). Drainage all working and free of leaves. Several large leaning trees on Gorge Brook and Snapper but they haven't truly become blow downs yet.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: All these trails are fine for dogs of all sizes. Small several. From the upper part of Gorge Brook to lower section of Carriage Road there is no water other than what is trickling down the trail.
Bugs
Bugs: Can't believe it but there was still a variety of no-see-ums flying around near my car when I was packing up for the day.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: The area around the lodge is a little confusing to find trail head. Sign for "trails" goes out back of a cul-de-sac and then turns into woods. Shortly thereafter is another intersection with no signs. Turn left to go to bridge that crosses river for Gorge Brook, Snapper and Hurricane trails. After crossing bridge there are signs and it is pretty straightforward. Other than that not much to report. Lot of wet areas and mud (the shallow slick type, not the deep nasty stuff) mixed in with dry stretches. Summits were in fog with a thin mist this morning so rocks above treeline were a little slick. All of these trails have comfortable grades and easy footing, wet or otherwise. Small section of trail leading up to South Peak was rocky and awkward with the wet conditions. Lot of construction going on around lodge too.
