Peaks
Peaks Carr Mountain, Waternomee Falls, NH
Trails
Trails: Carr Mountain Trail, Waternomee Falls Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, November 4, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Room for three cars alongside Clifford Brook Road. Clifford Brook Road is a bit crumbly. Most cars should be able to handle it, though. See dog note below. The Warren Fish Hatchery is a fun place to look around.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Ice - Black
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Easy rock-hopping.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Many blowdowns along the trail. One is particularly challenging to negotiate. The rest are easy step-overs or fairly painless crawl-unders.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Easy hike for dogs. Lots of water opportunities. BE CAREFUL when driving on the narrow, dirt road toward the trailhead (Clifford Brook Road). There's a sign that says "Golden Retriever Crossing" - and yes, there was a very enthusiastic retriever that came right up to the side of my car while I was trying to drive. It's a friendly guy/gal, but it has no fear of vehicles in motion, so drive slowly and carefully.
Bugs
Bugs: Two ticks. IT'S NOVEMBER. Ack.

Comments
Comments: No blazes on this trail, but the path is wide and easy to follow down low. Up top, most of the way is marked with pink tape. Even with all the crunchy leaves, route-finding was never an issue on the way to the summit.

That being said, to get to the Falls, stay straight after crossing the brook on the spur trail. It's easy to lose the route between the Brook and the falls.

There's some ice under the leaves on the upper fourth of the main trail, and all the bare rocks within the last couple tenths of a mile of the summit were covered in ice. Right now, it's all easy to avoid, but I expect that'll change soon.
