Comments
Comments: We met up with another group including Matt, Pam and 4 others for Randy's (sorry if I forgot your name, I'm horrible with them) NE100 finish on Vose Spur. Congratulations. I hadn't been to Vose Spur since 2003 and never imagined I would go back, let alone traverse the ridge again to Carrigain. We had boots/paws on trail at 8:20am. I followed the group up Carrigain Notch Tr to just past the large boulder, then we followed a drainage up to the SE ridge where a noticeable herd path was found. We followed this up to the upper talus field which had an amazing view to the SE. We followed the talus field up and around to the right, then re entered the woods on the upper left. The herd path then petered out amongst some blowdowns so we continued straight up and found another herd path that led us to the summit, complete with camp chair. After a short celebration Matt and I split from the group and headed off for Mt Carrigain.

Our first goal was to head for the talus field in the col then gain the NE ridge of Carrigain by conquering the sub peak. We had a good line of sight through the trees and headed towards the col. The views from the talus field in the col, particularly north towards Oaks Gulf and the Presis, are excellent. We next found the highest spot and plunged back into the trees. Heading up the sub peak was very steep and thick in spots with a couple of bowdown areas but strength and determination allowed us to push on. When it became too thick we skirted to the east until I could see a good line to ascend and soon we gained the ridge and found the cairn that marked the sub peak. From here a faint herd path could be followed about 90% of the way to the summit of Carrigain and the going was not too bad. The trees thickened as we crossed the small alpine patch just north of the summit but we plowed through the snowy spruce and picked up a well worn path past a set of old mattress springs and emerged into the tower clearing. It had taken us 1 hr 50 min to get from Vose Spur to Mt Carrigain.

After a few pics from the tower we headed down the Signal Ridge Tr and arrived at the parking lot at 5pm. Some care should be used as there are some icy spots forming but none long enough to warrant the microspikes. Thanks Matt for another adventure and somehow getting me to revisit Vose Spur.
