i drove in magalloway road from rt. 3 north of pittsburg for about 5.4 miles. there was roughly 4 inches of snow on the road that had thankfully been packed down by numerous trucks and was particularly well travelled on the drive out. still some notable drifting in spots. though the logging spur i was heading to was closer to 6 miles in i found a good place to park a bit earlier and went with it as i could not remember what opportunities there were farther in and my options were limited due to my low clearance vehicle and the snow cover. i was glad i put on the snow tires earlier than normal this year as i would not have even considered driving magalloway road with worn 3 seasons. |

i headed up the road on foot for about 10 minutes and then took the prominent spur to the left. a large truck had driven part way up in the recent past and its packed tracks made for easy going in the 4+ inches of snow along the road to just short of the landing at its end. i then headed in a direct line for the summit up through on old clearcut full of young birch and hardwood eventually picking up the corridor of a herd path that led to the top of the cut. from there to the ridge the woods were open with only a few sections of blowdown or thicker growth to wind around. snow depths increased to over 6 inches with drifted areas well over a foot. i hit the ridge line just below the summit to the south and turned north and up a short steep pitch to the high point. heading down i took full advantage of the seasonal luxury and followed my prints back out.
blaze orange highly recommended. with rifle season for deer starting tomorrow (nov 13) this becomes even more important in this area.
after a pretty difficult drive due to an unforeseen road closure, lots of black ice and a full on snow storm north of colebrook this was a real nice hike. full on winter conditions with temps in the mid teens at the car and a stiff wind with plenty of blowing snow. the woods were laden with fresh powder snow. some limited, but nice views back to the talus slopes on magalloway from the clearcut on the way up. great hike.
