Georg and I stopped at Crawford Notch in the morning where it was snowing and very winterish. It might just as well have been mid-January (although big snowbanks were missing). But conditions had changed dramatically as we reached Sawyer Road.
Trace amount of snow and some ice on the lower sections of the trail - but otherwise no real ice problems.
4-5" of fresh-powder from about 3,000 ft - deeper drifts along the ridge - enough to cover the rocks but insufficient to create solid footing. Georg bare-booted comfortably all the way. I used microspikes on the descent but I'm not really sure they helped very much. Snow coverage is insufficient and too "powderish" for snowshoes.
Cold day but not as windy as had been forecasted. |
