| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Just north of the TH on the other side of the road is a wideout which can hold a few cars easily. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Dry rock steps available |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
A couple of easy duckunders. Section where trail washed out by the brook (Irene?) now has a large ash upended in that area so the walkaround works both ways. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Pepper is pretty experienced with ice and thus had no problems with the trail other than having to wait for his slowpoke companion on the hike down. There is water to drink. |

I got by with microspikes but would have used Hillsounds if I had brought them. The only others on the trail, a nice couple on her first ice hike, were in Hillsounds. There was crusty snow down low that was barebootable with care going up, then a stretch of ice flow on the lower steeps, after that a mix of crusty snow and ice, and the last section on top back to ice flow. I'll guess that a couple inches of snow will hide the ice but spikes should still work, with care on the ice flow sections. As the snow gets deeper it is possible the spikes won't bite and crampons might be better. Still more snow would enable snowshoes.
This was a fun modest hike. It had interesting ice formations at the falls, a bit of a challenge with the ice to make it interesting, unique and great views from the summit and a fun and fast walk out down low. Goodbye Mike. |
