The weather forecast didn't look good - increasing clouds and cold, with a high near 1, wind chill values as low as -48 with a northwest wind 20 to 25 MPH - but I've learned that if you are at the trailhead you might as well start to see how car you get. We got the whole way - it was cold by there was ZERO wind. The trees never moved. In fact, the clouds parted to let us bask in sunlight atop Carter Dome.
We got to make fresh tracks up to Carter Dome and then down the Imp Trail - saw a couple (w a dog) heading to Mount Hight and then saw a couple of guys (also w a dog) near Middle Carter - based on the foot print evidence near the Imp Trail junction they were doing the whole ridge from Moriah through the Carters.
Did this one with the randomites. Some bare booted up Nineteen Mile Brook trail to the junction with the Carter Dome Trail. Then there was a mix of microspikes and hillsounds, and besides me blowing out a chain (again) there were no problems. On the way up to the ridge there were plenty of rocks jutting out from the snow. Along the ridge the snow range from about 12" to about 24" (mostly drifting). The Imp Trail is a miserable route right now. Not enough snow to cover all of the rocks and roots but just enough to make things tricky. |
