Found a pair of Camp Stalker crampons, on the trail near the summit of Mt. Madison. Brought them down to Madison Hut and left them there, near the benches in front of the hut. |

Went up the Airline. Well compacted snow in the lower section; the middle, steeper one, had lots of frozen ice steps (crampons recommended). I only had microspikes and had to be careful in a few spots. Higher up, some snowdrifts, nothing serious, postholed maybe for 20-30 yards just before the STOP warning sign above the tree line. Wouldn't bother bring snowshoes, yet. Nice "ice field" all around the Madison Hut. The climb toward the summit on exposed rocks, with minimal, 1-2 inches, rime ice, at the most. Very windy at the top but clear skies. Mt. Adams was all in clouds though, the whole time. Took a few pics and a short video on the top with a bare hand. Could feel it freezing very quickly, and painfully. On the way down, decided to go down via Valley Way, as the trail didn't have as much frozen ice and was easier to descend. Great hike, will try to go up tomorrow again and try reach Mt. Adams, weather permitting. |
