Comments
Comments: Carter-Moriah Tr. well packed base with 4" loose powder from Bangor St. to junc. Stony Brook Tr., light traction sufficient. Broke trail in about 2 feet of snow across Kenduskeag and upper Shelburne Tr. Looked as if no one had been there in a long time. No base thru to ground. Very hard going. Spruce traps, drifts up to 4' & unstable sastrugi. Blowouts and bare rock on upper ledges between heavy drifts. Some blue ice beneath snow in places. Cairns on Shelburne Moriah spare or non-existent--use care in following route. Snow depth tapers off further down the Shelburne Tr. but snow is prone to cavitation and sudden collapse in places due to past water activity. Last 2 miles of Shelburne Tr. packed flat by snowmachines where trail follows fire road. Shelburne Moriah now broken out by our party of 2: get out and enjoy it before the wind fills in our tracks!
