Comments
Comments: Didn't know what to expect this morning with rain and freezing rain on the way to the trail, but the precip let up soon after I left the car. The temps were in the mid 30's upon departure and were the same on my return. Early on there was about 2-3" of wet snow over a consolidated base. SM Trail was easy to follow. It was quite wide and blazed with old yellow blazes. Gaining elevation the snow depth increased from 8"-24". The packed trail was evident until about 2500', then it was drifted over. Easy to tell when I missed it, as the snow depth is a lot deeper than my last trip two weeks ago. The snow retained more powdery feel above 2000' and wasn't a problem. Winds were brisk on the open ridges, covering my trail on the return. No views at all at any time. The trail to Jennings was similar but with deeper drifts on the steep section leading to the summit. Overall a much better day than I expected, with respect to the weather forecast.
