forecast sounded a bit dire so headed to Waumbek. We put on spikes at the car and easily made it to Starr King on mostly packed out frozen granular surface. One long shelf of blue ice near the spring. Decent views from elevated snowpack from Starr King and from the fireplace. We put on snowshoes there and wore them back to the car as snow much less consolidated on the ridge over to Waumbek. Evidence of a trench in places, none in others, booters beware, this is softening up rapidly up here. Some nice views along the way and even some blue sky. Snowpack had softened quite a bit on our descent and there was quite a bit of running water and slush on the trail in places. For sure this counted as the first spring hike!! Never got rained on a bit but was pouring by the time back to Ashland. Thanks Sue for a good day out!!! |
