We had set up to do a traverse from South to North with a car spotted at the Baths parking. Wore spikes to Middle Moat in the morning. There was a solid trail to South and footprints to Middle. From there no one had been through since before the last major snow, so we switched to snowshoes. Even with them I was sinking deep in many places. At the junction with the Red Ridge Trail there was no indication that anyone had been to North Moat or down the Red Ridge. We opted to go down the ridge. The ledges were mostly open, but every time we had to re-enter the woods we had trouble finding the trail. about 2/3 down we decided to turn around and go out the way we came in. Quite a workout, but we got the views twice. |
