Trails
Trails: Haystack Road, herd path
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, May 25, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The gate was still closed from rt 3 to Haystack road. After speaking with Forrest Services, it will probably be opened up once we have some drier weather and the road hardens a bit.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: nothing to be concerned with.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: This isn't technically a trail, so don't expect any maintenance.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Definitely not a hike recommended for dogs. We had some difficult challenges along the way, with the bushwhack, and also with the steeps coming down. Luckily, the hardest one has a rope tied in.
Bugs
Bugs: They are starting to come out - no black flies yet, but some pesky biters.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Tragically, my friend, Pucknuts, lost his GPS. We think it was around the large stone cave about 1/3 to 1/2 way to the false peak after turning onto the bushwhack. If found, please let me know. It is black, and a touchscreen.

Comments
Comments: Wow - what a challenging trek. We weren't expecting to tack on the road walk due to the closed gate, so it added some miles to our trip. Coming down, there is a section of pretty steep and slick rock. Some requires some downclimbing, other sections with tied in ropes, and a third has a makeshift wooden ladder (with loose second rung - watch out!) No snow or ice anywhere on the mountain, and we had some nice views from the summit.
