Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Old Jackson not bad, some stepover blowdowns. More blowdowns on Madison Gulf and water in the trail. Great Gulf some blowdowns and water. Wamsutta had short stretches of snow and ice; the waterbars were basically working, with one major blowdown near Great Gulf. Six Husbands trail in pretty good shape as were the trails above treeline.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper had fun. Sip n dips on the lower trails were plentiful, not so much higher up. The sun did heat his black fur up above treeline, but he was okay today with it given the comfy temps. I had water for him but he didn't use it. The ladders and ledges on Six Husbands would be problematic and risky for most dogs who would need to be carried. Pepper has been up these before and is pretty good with ladders; with some careful spotting and a few butt shoves or holds, he got up them all.
Bugs
Bugs: A few flies of some sort, not black flies.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: I lost my red Cannon point and shoot in its dark blue nylong case. It is on the Madison Gulf trail south of the Great Gulf Trail intersection, probably at a "wideout" in the trail next to a brook. It was dusk and I just forgot to pick it up, and didn't realize that until too late.

Comments
Comments: Great weather, views, mountains and companions made this a (surprise) great hike. It was snowfree except for Wamsutta, which still had stretches of snow, a couple roughly 2' deep. It was a bit slow going down due to the slippery ice and/or snow, but going up would be much better. It is a nice trail, with unique views and obvious care by its trail maintainer. Six Husbands was in good shape, the ledges and ladders were dry and while they may make going up a bit slower for regular hikes, and put off some not so regular, they are fine for use. There is a fair amount of water on Madison Gulf, less on Great Gulf and still less on Old Jackson. Erica did all the trails in sandals, and yes her socks got wet but she had no problems. I used light boots and summer gaiters which did a fairly good job keeping me dry. Pepper used his organics and did well. We saw a few hikers around Jefferson, and that was it. It was a long and wonderful day out on the trails, and although losing my camera was a bummer, we have great memories. Thanks!
