Great route - a long one for sure to climb Mr.. Hiked in on Sunday afternoon and camped in the woods off-trail a few miles in. Next day (Monday), hiked to the summit of Mt. Carrigain. What gem. Views fantastic! Could see the whole Pemi loop. Worth all the effort. Newly resurfaced and renovated observation platform was great. Hiked back out to Lincoln Woods on Monday, arriving back to the parking lot at sunset. Did not see any other hikers until late Monday evening. I imagined having the whole wilderness to myself...
This is a beautiful section of the Whites and is worth visiting again and again. Wonderful 200-foot-off-trail camping spots available between Stillwater Junction and the Desolation Trail - Carrigan Notch Trail intersection. Convenient water source is the river.
After a long winter I was starved for a good walk in the woods. This was it! |
